Day 17 of the #100happydays challenge. Today I saw this picture by John Stanmeyer, an American photographer, that won the World Press Photo of the Year 2013 award. The picture captures African migrants on the shore of Djibouti at night. They are raising their phones in the air so they could get an inexpensive signal from neighbouring Somalia. This is their only link to their friends and family abroad. Djibouti is a stop-off point for migrants in transit from Ethiopia and Somalia in pursuit of a better life in Europe. To me, this poignant piece is all about the value of communication. Determined and extremely dignified, capable of making someone happy with a message. Like a message in a bottle, it will withstand the test of time and help us see the world in more than one dimension.

17-й день проекта «100 счастливых дней». Эта фотография победителя престижного конкурса фотожурналистики World Press Photo вызвала во мне волну непонятных чувств. На фотографии африканские мигранты на побережье в Джибути пытаются поймать сигнал на мобильных телефонах, чтобы связаться с родными в соседнем государстве – Сомали. Мне фотография кажется многогранной, поскольку в ней затронуто одновременно несколько серьезных тем: миграция, нищета, проблемы коммуникаций, технологии, глобализация. И что несмотря на все переезды и расставания, мы всегда делаем все возможное для того, чтобы связаться с близкими.
