Day 21 of the #100happydays challenge.

I remember first seeing this picture on Awesome People Hanging out Together — a shamelessly entertaining Tumblr website that showcases shots of famous individuals. The photograph features Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir sharing lunch and a newspaper on a dark Parisian afternoon. I always imagined that this is what all their Sunday lunches looked like: the ultimate power couple having a glass or two of wine, getting engrossed in the latest news, agreeing to disagree on major issues, and intellectually challenging each other while recognising the brilliance of the other’s mind and pursuits. I wish to think that Sartre never dismissed Beauvoir’s activism and views as idle or irrelevant while she never felt as if she were expected to play a mere support role to the “most inquisitive mind” of our times or to follow his every wish and whim. На снимке изображены Жан-Поль Сартр и Симона де Бовуар, обсуждающие какую-то статью в газете в ожидании обеда. Мне хочется думать, что именно так всегда проходили их воскресные обеды: за бокалом вина, в обсуждении последних мировых новостей, в интеллектуальных беседах. Их часто называют “самой влиятельной парой нашего времени”, но чего им стоило сохранить эти отношения? Их принципиально нетрадиционный брак продержался почти 50 лет, вплоть до его смерти в 1980 году.
