This year, London is a fashion-lovers’ paradise: it all started with the Pearls Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum, moved on to the Italian Glamour Show, and carried on dazzling our poor little souls with the Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier at the Barbican. I booked in to check it out on a work-night with a group of amazing friends – all of them professional women who live and breathe the world of the beautiful: from hedonistic and lively dinners to exclusive fashion previews, high tea, and races. Bar Gaultier, specially designed for the exhibition, offers great cocktails with appropriately glitzy names: Breton (with a splash of mint bitters), Enfant Terrible (with Lillet Blanc), and Ooh La La (boy, that Jameson gave me one hell of a kick!). The exhibition itself is the epitome of outrage and playfulness, drizzled generously with sailor garb, pink boudoir pieces, cancan skirts, gender-bending styles, and punk mohicans. Sadly, the main exhibit at the entrance has a petite spelling mistake that I thought was rather giggle-worthy – see if you can spot it on one of the pictures below. Oh, and how can I not mention Nana – a nearly 60-year-old teddy bear that was Gaultier’s first muse. He still has some lipstick on it, a cut on his belly, and a conical bra that acted as a prototype for the basque Madonna wore on her Blond Ambition Tour in 1990. Nana is the centerpiece of the exhibition but can I just say that he looks a bit like… an enfant terrible?
