In my opinion, one cannot call themselves truly British unless they attend Royal Ascot Races at least once in their lifetime. The event is such a joyful carnival of British quirkiness and friendliness, the ultimate celebration of the nation’s love for a splendid spectacle, the perfect representation of the country’s untethering spirit. If I had to script my ideal day out, it would have been this visit to Royal Ascot, ultimately my first: a beautiful day in sunshine surrounded by friends, jugs and jugs of Pimm’s, and smiley faces. The whiff of grass, horses, and cheese toasties feeling the air, the bottles of pink and golden champagne seeming bottomless, the dresses, hats, and heels all colourful and glittery. Having never tried my hand at betting, I was feeling rather intimidated at first by the intense calculations and contradictory predictions around me. But then, everyone who knows me well says that even if I am hopeless at math and lack common sense, I am good with anything to do with languages. With that in mind, I decided to bet on the horse which name was bugging me since the beginning – it was misspelt, would you believe it? Getting out of my comfort zone literally paid off: I am now the Queen of Betting and 65 pounds richer in all. Для местной знати Королевские скачки – одно из важнейших событий светского календаря. Сама Королева не пропускает ни одного дня скачек и активно «болеет» за своих любимцев. Приезд Елизаветы II и ее супруга, принца Филиппа, герцога Эдинбургского сигнализирует начало забегов. В день моего посещения скачек Ее Величество была одета в костюм пурпурного цвета, и мило приветствовала посетителей со своей кареты. Для меня же день был наполнен восхитительными впечатлениями: солнечные лужайки, красивые шляпки, элегантные платья и костюмы, розовое шампанское и традиционный британский коктейль Pimm’s. И все это в окружении хороших друзей и интересных людей! Больше всего запомнилось, как по окончании забега все собрались вокруг оркестра, и дружно распевали британский гимн и военные песни. О, и чуть не забыла! Впервые в жизни сделала ставку на лошадь (и то только потому, что ее имя было написано с грамматической ошибкой, что жутко действовало мне на нервы!) и выиграла почти 100 долларов. Гип-гип-ура!
