Born and raised in a city and being ideologically opposed to the concept of zoos, I rarely had a chance to come close to any wildlife. Tigers, monkeys, elephants fascinate me endlessly, and I would love to live in a world where we can all co-exist happily within the same environment. Closest I ever came to my dream was on my travels through Thailand and Singapore over Christmas. Buddha Cave Temple, also known as Wat Suwannakuha (“that temple with a big Buddha in a cave”), is located in Phang-Nga district of Phuket. On your way through the district, you pass several colourful temples, around which I highly recommend a little wander. Buddha Cave Temple is occupied by thousands of wild monkeys chasing tourists for food, playing, cuddling, and bouncing about. Their facial expressions change with unbelievable speed, moving from extremely nonchalant to curious, from cheeky to pensive. Peanuts are the favourite of the lil’ ones — they stuff their cheeks until they almost explode, then run away and hide them somewhere before coming back to you to beg for more with the most beseeching look on their little cute faces! And how can you say ‘no’ to that? The temple itself is also a great sight to visit: encompassing large and small caves, with a 15-metre lying Buddha in the centre, and lots of interesting statues and icons inside.

Как типичное дитя мегаполиса, я никогда не имела возможности близкого контакта с дикой природой. Всеми фибрами души ненавидящая зоопарки, клетки и цепи, я никогда не представляла себе, что смогу когда-нибудь поиграть с дикими животными, покормить их и понаблюдать за их поведением. К счастью, такая возможность представилась во время поездки на остров Пхукет в Таиланде. Ват Суван Куха, известный под названием “Храм обезьян” или “Пещерный храм”, находится в провинции Панг Тга и окружен высочайшими скалами, на которых живут тысячи мартышек. Целые поколения выросли на туристической отрасли и приучены спускаться к храму, чтобы поиграть с очередной группой посетителей и выклянчить порцию бананов и арахиса. Особенно настойчивы малыши: тщательно запихав как можно больше арахиса за щеки, они исчезают за скалами, а потом появляются вновь и с жалостливым видом начинают требовать добавки. Да и как можно им отказать? Сам храм тоже рекомендуется посетить: он состоит из нескольких пещер, смежных друг с другом, с тайской святыней, статуей Лежащего Будды, по центру.
